JOB SUMMARY: Reporting directly to the Technical Development / Technical Service Specialist Lead, the Technical Service Specialist (TSS) is responsible for providing agronomic support and technical expertise to the UPL Territory Sales Managers (TSM’s), retailers and farm customers, private consultants and key agronomic contacts within the region. The TSS will also work with the Development Manager to assess the leading agronomic challenges and find solutions to meet those challenges. The TSS manages the planning and oversees the implementation and completion of annual field trial plans utilized to educate and promote key products for market development purposes. The TSS will work with key influencers (researchers, consultants, university contacts, growers, distribution technical staff) to set up research and demonstration trials to identify new opportunities and improve product performance. The TSS works collaboratively with the other TSS’s and the Development Manager to develop and deliver accurate messaging and training to support UPL’s product portfolio. The TSS provides input to the Canadian Leadership Team (Development Manager, Marketing Managers, Regulatory Manager, and Regional Sales Managers), in developing strategies on commercial and development activities, initiatives and plans. The TSS should be aligned with UPL sales and marketing goals to position the product portfolio for a successful launch of new products. This person should also steward the products in their region for sustainability of the portfolio as well as customer satisfaction.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
• A Bachelor’s degree with a focus in Agriculture or related field along with experience in crop protection sales, research or technical service is required. A Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
• 3 or more years of research or agronomy experience in the agriculture chemical or related agriculture industry required.
• Experience working on/around farm equipment a plus.
• Must be a self-starter with the proven ability to understand, influence and relate to customers, growers, consultants, agronomists, researchers and coworkers.
• Must work well independently with a team structure.
• Must have ability to understand and present clear, concise data to individuals and in a group setting.
• Must have effective presentation skills.
• Must be able to analyze, interpret and act upon complex data and analyze and solve complex problems.
• Strong time-management, problem-solving and communication skills are also required.
• This position is required to live within the assigned territory of Alberta.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft office programs (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook).
• Ability to travel and willingness to maintain an office at their residence is required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide technical input and assist Territory Sales Managers in developing and implementing product/grower/dealer support programs to accomplish territory objectives for current products.
• Work with Territory Sales Managers at retail accounts to promote products by providing consistent and accurate agronomic and technical support.
• Develop relationships with agronomists, customers and growers to promote targeted UPL products.
• Train and support growers, agronomic consultants and retailer key agronomic decision makers on UPL product line via virtual or in person presentations.
• Work with TSS Team to create and deliver external technical based sales and agronomy presentations, including graphics and handouts.
• Become and “expert” in an assigned product area (herbicides, seed treatments, BioSolutions, insecticides or fungicides), coordinate information and provide guidance to other TSS’s or TSM’s.
• Work closely with the Regional Sales Managers, Marketing Managers, and Development Manager to identify suitable marketing promotional programs for the territory, obtaining buy in and approval.
• Understand and effectively communicate competitive intelligence and market trends.
• Respond to technical service inquiries from customers and sales team members in a timely fashion. Analyze inquiries to be able to identify trends leading to emerging issues.
• Work with the TSS Team to develop and deliver key agronomic messaging and product training to TSM’s.
• Work closely with technical development manager and TSS team to identify trial locations, summarize and share data, and build out launch plans to support new product introductions.
• Identify, plan, place and record all market support / demonstration trials in the assigned territory.
• Responsible for coordinating and collecting data for demonstration within the assigned territory.
• Represent the company at trade events or industry functions as assigned.
• Responsible for monitoring and adhering to company guidelines for expenses, promotion, travel and entertainment budgets.
