Primary Position Purpose


To help support the breeding program and create superior sorghum genetics enabling the company to expand and consolidate its sorghum market share by:


  • Developing superior forage sorghum hybrids that deliver reliable and high productivity in the United States production regions.
  • Identifying opportunities from research community that are likely to add value to the Alta Seeds and Advanta Private Label customers so that the company develop products that meets future challenges and growers’ expectations.
  • Assist in management of both FTE and Seasonal Help.


Key Accountabilities

Forage Sorghum Line and Hybrid Development

  • Make sure that line and hybrid seeds are produced within quantity and quality parameters
  • Ensure generations are as advanced as planned so that the program will deliver improved products as quickly as possible 
  • Characterize elite lines in depth


Organization of multi-location trials

  • Rigorous evaluation of experimental hybrids
  • Develop quality and quantity of data
  • Promotion of new hybrids to meet portfolio needs and gaps


Seed stores are professionally maintained

  • Leads the timely removal of unwanted seed sources
  • Ensures the inventory is up to date & matches the database accurately so that information is accessed globally with more confidence.
  • Monitor quantities of germplasm as appropriate by stage of development.
  • Interact with parent seed unit to ensure the genetic identity of elite lines are maintained


Pedigree breeding populations

  • Ensure all planned crosses are accurately done so that the next generation of elite lines created efficiently
  • Ensure the required seed quantity of newly created breeding populations is produced to ensure wide genetic diversity array is evaluated 


Marker Assisted Selection (MAS)

  • Coordinate with molecular lab team to organize timely shipments of samples to make sure that results are obtained in time to drive marker assisted selections
  • Collaborate the parent seed unit in tagging, sampling and shipment of leaf tissues to molecular lab to test genetic purity
  • In collaboration with parent seeds and molecular lab, undertake bulk seeds sample analysis to verify the genetic uniformity of elite lines


Global seed exchanges

  • Coordinate shipment of parent seeds to different breeding program within Advanta including organization of documents.
  • Coordinate shipment with receiver. 


Supervision of Staff

  • Make sure research technicians are properly coached & supervised to carry out their tasks in safe manner as per the company work health & safety policies
  • Assign tasks as needed in order to efficiently conduct the work within the breeding program 
  • Recruit, train & supervise Seasonal Help



Educational Background


Ph.D. in Plant Breeding & Genetics preferred.  Master’s Degree or equivalent Experience in Plant Breeding and Genetics or related field of study, with 3-5 years of experience in seed research required





  • Agriculture - Knowledge of agriculture industry including grain and forage sorghums.
  • Advanced Math Skills - Including statistical analysis and interpretation, stats software management are desirable. 
  • Computer knowledge – Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office Suite,
  • Equipment Operation - Experience operating and repairing agricultural equipment
  • Quality - Attention to Detail
  • Teamwork - Ability and willingness to work cooperatively with others
  • Multicultural Approach - Ability to work in a corporation with global network (global company)
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required


Travel Requirements

Approximately 15% travel to company sites and including domestic and international travel.
