Position Responsibilities

In compliance with safety regulations, you develop and carry out seed biology experiments in controlled conditions by referring to the corresponding standard operating procedures. To do this, you act as study director, write study plans, monitor the studies and write study reports. In addition, you ensure data security for laboratory notebooks and databases. You are responsible for the growth and the maintenance of the living material (seeds, plants and micro-organisms) in the laboratory. For some studies, you may need to contribute to the development new study models and carry out bibliographic studies. You contribute to the continuous improvement of processes, methodology and study plans. You assist in demonstrating the work and capabilities of the Seed Laboratory to visitors.


Major Accountabilities

  • Write study plans, perform test item application for seed treatments (fungicides, insecticides, bio-stimulants, micro-nutrients etc.), set up bioassays and realize assessments using a combination of well-established methods and novel testing procedures.
  • Undertake seed testing according to International Seed Testing Association Standards (ISTA)
  • Perform and record detailed assessments in accordance with the relevant study plans and European Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) guidelines.
  • Maintain the living resources to a high standard of housekeeping, to include seeds, plants and fungal cultures.
  • Keep laboratory resources and equipment to an acceptable standard of maintenance and housekeeping.
  • Record all data accurately and in compliance with good scientific and good laboratory practice
  • Accurately transcribe data from studies into the Agricultural Research Manager (ARM) statistical software and perform data analysis, interpret the data and write study reports.
  • Work to the principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) & according to the guidelines of the Official Recognition of Efficacy Testing Organization (ORETO) program.
  • Exercise due care and attention in working according to documented procedures and safety standards.
  • Ensure that all activities are compliant with UPL Ltd procedures and policies.
  • Complete project tasks and communicate results against agreed timelines. 
  • Contribute to team meetings.
  • Assist in communicating the work of the Seed Laboratory and representing the Lab in front of visitors.




Key competencies required for the role


  • Technical skills:
  • Good knowledge of plant biology and plant physiology together with specific knowledge of seed biology and seed pathology.
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory techniques, particularly in relation to seed testing.
  • Good computer literacy particularly in the use of Excel, Word and other Microsoft software.
  • A good understanding of statistics applied to lab studies. A specific knowledge of Agriculture Research Manager (ARM) software would be advantageous.
  • Good scientific writing, communication and presentation skills.
  • Good organization skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and Health and Safety (HSE) regulations and their implementation.
  • Knowledge and experience of working in compliance with GLP and/or ORETO would be advantageous




Educational background / Experience

  • Degree in Biology, Plant Sciences, Plant Physiology or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Ideally three years’ experience within a relevant laboratory.
