1. Job Purpose

The Shift Incharge is responsible for managing the safe and efficient operation of the power plant during the assigned shift. This role ensures smooth running of boilers, turbines, generators, compressors, and all utility systems while maintaining compliance with safety, legal, and quality standards.


2. Key Responsibilities

Operational Management

  • Monitor and operate boilers, turbines, generators, cooling towers, air compressors, and other utility equipment.
  • Ensure continuous power and steam supply as per plant requirements.
  • Review plant parameters and take corrective actions during any deviation.
  • Coordinate with process, maintenance, and control room teams for smooth operations.

Shift Supervision

  • Lead and guide shift operators and technicians.
  • Allocate shift jobs and ensure proper shift handover and logbook updates.
  • Maintain discipline, teamwork, and compliance within the shift team.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all operations follow safety SOPs and statutory guidelines.
  • Conduct safety checks, toolbox talks, and ensure use of PPE.
  • Report unsafe conditions and incidents immediately.

Maintenance Coordination

  • Communicate abnormalities to maintenance teams and support breakdown handling.
  • Assist in planned shutdown and preventive maintenance activities.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain shift reports, log sheets, and equipment performance records.
  • Escalate critical issues to the Power Plant Manager on time.
  • Suggest improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce energy cost.

3. Qualifications & Experience

  • Diploma/Degree in Mechanical / Electrical / Instrumentation Engineering.
  • 3–7 years of experience in power plant or utility operations (depending on role seniority).
  • Knowledge of boiler operations, turbine operations, and utility equipment is essential.
  • Boiler Supervisor Certificate (where applicable) is preferred.

  • Strong technical understanding of power plant operations.
  • Good decision-making during abnormal conditions.
  • Leadership and team-handling skills.
  • Basic computer knowledge for reporting and data entry.
  • Safety awareness and problem-solving ability.

5. Working Conditions

  • Rotational shift work.
  • Field and control room-based activity.
  • Must be available during emergencies or breakdowns.
